Employees of the department’s Victim Services Unit provide confidential services to victims and witnesses of violent crimes on a 24-hour basis. All Durham Police Department employees have an obligation to ensure that victims and witnesses are treated with fairness, dignity and compassion.
Victim Services Unit are responsible for:
- Giving current information on case status
- Making referrals to other agencies in the service area, victim services advocates
- Providing general assistance with criminal justice system procedures
- Rendering other individual services as needed to augment those services already provided by other agencies
- Serving as advocates
In addition to direct services, the Victim Services Unit distributes information to internal and external audiences, facilitates training for other DPD units and community groups, and coordinates the departments annual observance of National Crime Victims Rights Week.
